SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Friends and Family of the Buckeye Local School District, As the leaves begin to fall and summer slowly gives way to autumn, we eagerly prepare for a new school year. We, as a staff, will strive to help our most precious asset, your children, engage in lifelong learning, acquire the skills necessary to become effective members of society, and excel on state achievement tests.
Our District will face many changes in the new year. Students will attend new schools, teachers will teach in different buildings and staff members will be challenged like never before. We view these changes as a challenge to successfully overcome. We will not shy away from our duty and responsibility to our students, district and community. The Buckeye Local School District is committed to preparing our students to meet the global challenges of the 21st Century
As a new school year begins our students will be challenged to work to their fullest potential so they may develop skills to become successful later in life. Staff members will use the latest educational tools available to help your child succeed.
The District has also partnered with many community organizations to offer new innovative learning opportunities. Successful community partnerships have been developed in an effort to prepare our students for the future. Partnerships with the Brightway Center and START L.L.C. have enabled our students and staff to gain valuable knowledge in the areas of diversity, acceptance of various viewpoints and school safety.
State achievement scores will remain a high priority in the upcoming year. The use of proven research-based strategies i.e. Study Island, Marzano High Yields Strategies, coupled with short cycle assessments and bench marking tests will provide a road map to improve student achievement.
Our success is due in no small part to the hard work of our students and the dedicated staff members that work with each of them every day. Continued success would not be possible without the help and support of parents, family and community members. Your continued involvement will help our district grow in the future. Your child's building has numerous opportunities for you to aid in your child's educational success. Working as a P.T.O. volunteer, i.e. homeroom parent, holiday party or field trip supervisor" or even athletic parent group officer is greatly appreciated. These are only a few of the many opportunities available. I encourage you to please contact an area building principal in your town so he or she may utilize your talents to help the children of the district have a successful and rewarding school year.
I would like to wish each of you good luck in the upcoming year. Should you have any questions, please call. I can be reached at 769-7395.
Thank you,
Mark S. Miller, Supt.

Buckeye North Elementary:
We had a very productive year at North Elementary where we ALL have Panther Pride! Students worked very hard this year toward the OAA tests with preparations using our Study Island program and Benchmarking Tests, DIBELS (to practice and calculate reading fluency), Quarterly short-cycle tests in Math for the building and District-wide Short Cycle tests in Reading and Math. This year the Kindergarten through 3rd grade also were involved in the Diagnostic tests for the state along with the new pilot program of PARCC tests(an online testing program) for the 6th grade . We always begin with our Summer Intervention to get the students on track for the beginning of the year. We encourage all students from Grades 3-6 to participate yearly. Some of the extra activities we do at North are: Back to School Bash, Student of the Week, Birthday celebrations, Bus Safety, Fire House Visitation, Olympic Challenge, Red Ribbon Week, United Way Campaign, Red Cross Program for Gr. 4, Literacy Night, Veterans Day program, Awards Assembly each nine weeks, Market Day, Spelling Bee, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Christmas program, Lunch with the Principal, Santa Visit, Flower Sale, Muffins with Mom & Donuts with Dad (PS program), Book Fair, Fun Day, Relay for Life, School Olympics, Recycling Program and several more.
We invite all parents (and family members) to join our PTO. They provide treats for holidays, Christmas gifts, Fun Day and many more wonderful items for our students. They work very hard and would enjoy some extra hands!
Our goal of course, as always, is to increase our Reading and Math scores and become all around proficient in all areas. We can’t do this without the parents/family help!! It is crucial to help your child succeed. Together we can be very successful!! Common core standards are being put into place, which puts more challenges to the students to become more responsible and proficient.

Buckeye South Elementary:
Goals established for the 2013 - 2014 school year included the following:
1. Continue to improve student achievement in all core content areas
2. Continue positive incentive programs recognizing academic achievement, attendance, and acceptable behavior
3. Provide training to enhance student and staff safety awareness
The staff at South Elementary makes every effort to provide a safe environment for every student daily. The students and staff practice various drills including fire and tornado drills as well as procedures to follow for evacuations or lockdowns. Students have also participated in several safety trainings learning various procedures to follow if an intruder would enter the building. Several drills took place during the last few days of school to continuing our training.
Literacy Night, entitled Santa’s Workshop, was held during Christmas . Parents and students joined us for an enchanted evening while taking a stroll through Santa’s Village. The first floor hallway was converted to resemble the North Pole with many Christmas trees, Santa’s sleigh, and the reindeer barn. Students visited several stations including the Reindeer Barn to play Reindeer games, the North Pole mail room to write letters to Santa, the Elf room to participate in a book walk, the Candy Room to guess the amount of candy in each jar, Santa’s Den to speak with Santa, Santa’s Workshop to make a Christmas Ornament, and Mrs. Claus’s Kitchen to eat cookies and milk. The evening continued with a special performance by all elementary students titled “The Polar Express.” At the conclusion of the program, all students enjoyed one final visit from Santa before he headed off to the North Pole.
Our annual Veterans Day Program was a huge success with approximately 60 veterans in attendance. All students participated by singing patriotic songs including the National Anthem. All veterans were introduced announcing the branch of military, years and wars served and honors or medals awarded.
